National legal basis
Division 4A of Customs (Prohibited Exports) Regulations 1958. Defence Trade Controls Act 2012 for intangible exports i.e., technology. Regulation 5J of the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956
Administrative mechanism
All exports require a permit from the Department of Defence prior to export.
Import permits may be granted by the Minister for Foreign Affairs or delegate, consistent with the Chemical Weapons Convention.
