Diamonds - Kimberley Process
National legal basis
The Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 covers rough diamonds in Regulation 4MA (2002). The importation of rough diamonds from Cote d’Ivoire is covered by Regulation 4N (2006) but is underway for repeal.
The Customs (Prohibited Exports) Regulations 1958 covers the export of rough diamonds in regulation 9AA (2002).
Administrative mechanism
Rough diamonds may only be imported from or exported to a country which is participating in the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme and must be accompanied by a Kimberley Process Certificate verifying the goods as free of conflict diamonds.
